the winter garden

Seedheads, the pure skeletal forms of trees, monochrome skies, bare stems catching low slanting sunlight to break into oranges, fiery reds and bronze. The contrast of dark reflective greens. Vegetable beds tucked up under mulch, crumbled by sharp frost. Buds fattening up on magnolias and the pure white creep of snowdrops.
The months for planning, ordering seeds, cleaning pots, sheds and greenhouses. For my practice, it is a busy time for ordering plants to plant once the soil warms up.
