The extent of the tragedy

fallen copper beechThis tree is - or was - my friend Panda's prize possession.  The tree - a 300 year old copper beech - was in her view - framing the river and water meadows below her house.  It also stabilised the bank but came crashing down in the winds this past weekend.  From the picture she has sent me, it Looks like the roots have been munched away by some fell troglodytic beast.  We need a post mortem from the tree surgeon, She is bereft and wants to move house but  from a distance (I live a 3 hour drive away) I am trying to convince her that it is an opportunity for a change.  As soon as I get there , I will post bank pictures for a planting competition.
